I used to listen to a lot of J-Pop/Rock and really enjoyed it when I was younger but now the music just seems to be the exact same song/same singer/same band with different lyrics (or maybe same lyrics if I could fluently understand japanese). And then with the invention of Vocaloid I am almost convinced that all japanese singers are androids now.

So why is J-pop/rock popular here with anime fans? Is it because it really is good? It's just associated with an awesome show? Or it is, as I suspect, just "not Western" and therefore more appealing?

I hate to be overly critical of someone's else good times but I twitched a lot during the karaoke section of Nakakon. Not at the singing but of the popularity of the song selection!

Note: I love a lot of japanese bands/etc. but almost all of the mainstream music is on the same level as main stream stuffin the West in my opinion.

I only listen to anime related music so I couldn't tell you about J-pop in general

I prefer not understanding them. Then I can pretend they're something smokin' instead of sounding either psychotic or like bad junior high school love poems.

Lord, no. Well, some of it is.

That's some of it for me. I've found myself much more enthusiastic about a theme after finding out I liked the show.

Since it is about the most Western form of Japanese popular culture, I'm dubious.

For me there are two significant factors. One is that there's a lot of girl groups and singers, and I much prefer female singers to male ones, in general. (There are exceptions, of which by far the biggest is Al Stewart.)

The second reason is as follows: I think for most people their musical tastes tend to crystallize at the point that they first start paying attention to music. For me that was the late '60's/early '70's (yes, Lord, including disco), and a lot of the really pop-y current Japanese stuff could easily have been written here during that period, whereas almost no one here is doing that kind of stuff, or does it so damn self-consciously that it's no good. You don't have to look at all far in J-Pop to find significant and overt Motown, disco, glam, and folk influence, except the arrangements are way more elaborate and, as mentioned, tend to be done by girls. I was delighted when I discovered J-pop simply because it represented a new source of styles I already liked.

I have no idea why fans two or three generations younger than me would have any use for it, except that it's part of the experience.

I listen to a variety of stuff from all over the world. I'm just not picky about music, I guess.
