This is a neat look at the relatively secretive R&D efforts of Microsoft's Surface technology that's been in the works for a few years now applied to, what else, table top gaming. Specifically D&D. This feeds directly into my unwholesome need to automate everything:

Someone called this to my attention a few weeks ago. At first glance it's sexy as hell, but I'm kind of unimpressed for three reasons:
1. The astronomical price for a display big enough to do you any good, and that isn't going to change much any time soon.
2. The fact that is doesn't get you much of anything much easier than you already have - is having it figure moves and ranges for you really that much easier than just using a ruler or counting hexes?
3. The nuisance of setting every scenario up.
There's a shareware program out there called "Map Tool" that I'm considering investigating, that does a lot of the same things on the monitor to expedite Web-communicated gaming. It even has the capability to do line-of-sight for players and NPCs. |
